OLIVE TREE - BONSAI
The mythology of the olive tree, which is the symbol of freedom, wisdom, happiness
and satisfaction, also for a long life, you can read about it in all aspects of life,
e.g. religion and history.
During the long span of growth from a seedling to a mature olive tree,
a deep relationship and bond develops between the human and the tree, in which
you can find peace and harmony – a present from the goddess Minerva to humans.
The BONSAI flourishes not only in nature, but also in the home. It loves warmth
and light. During the warm months the ideal place is in the sun on the balcony or in
the garden, however before the first frost you should bring the olive tree inside to a
moderately heated room by the window.
In the summer months the soil must be moist continuously, so during the evening hours
the tree is replenished. In the winter months it is not necessary to give so much water,
only if it is placed near a heating system.
Pruning and creating the form of your BONSAI can be done during the whole period
of growth (spring – summer). The new shoots should be cut after the second or third
pair of leaves. By young trees the soil should be changed every 2 or 3 years, by old trees
every 5–7 years. The optimum soil consists of 60% regular flower soil, 30% peat,
4% pebbles, 3% sand and 3% compost.
To give form to the 1 year old branches, wind wire around it and bend to the form
desired. The wire can then be removed after 1 – 2 months. It is essential to work with
great care as it is possible to break or damage the branch, also the wire should not be
too tight, because this can leave marks on it.During the period of growth fertilizer should
be given 1 time per month (regular liquid plant fertilizer).
I wish you peaceful hours and a lot of pleasure with your BONSAI.
